Overview

Residential Building Code

California adopted a statewide mandatory residential code that will control; however, local governments are free to make laws more strict (with some limitations).See PLRB, California Building Codes for more information on state level codes.

Alameda County adopted the 2012 IRC, locally. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

Alameda County adopted the 2013 California Residential Code, including Appendices G [Swimming Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs] and H [Patio Covers]. Alameda County, Cal., Muni Code § 15.08.350. 

The County amended the 2013 California Residential Code. Alameda County, Cal., Muni Code ch. 15.08 art. II. The County's amendments did not reference Table R301.2(1) Climatic and Geographic Design Criteria. Alameda County, Cal., Muni Code § 15.08.370.

 

Commercial Building Code

Alameda County adopted the 2012 IBC, statewide with limitations. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

Alameda County adopted Appendices C [Agricultural Buildings] and I [Patio Covers]. Alameda County, Cal., Muni Code § 15.08.030. Alameda County amended the 2013 California Building Code. Alameda County, Cal., Muni Code ch. 15.08 art. I. 

The county exercised its authority to establish more restrictive and reasonably necessary differences to the provisions of the 2013 California Building Code, and claims its modifications comply with Health and Safety Code Section 18941.5 for Building Standards Law, Health and Safety Code Section 17958 for State Housing Law. Alameda County, Cal., Muni Code § 15.08.020.
